Teaching RAG to read: making charts, tables and equations reliable on individual learners' budget

Emily Phuong Nghiem
Provio
Abstract

Standard RAG fails silently on the content that matters most in textbooks and financial documents, a chart becomes an empty image tag, a table of financial ratios disappears, an equation becomes garbled text. This talk covers our lessons learned making a learning product reliable on multimodal content, using Chinese open-source vision models that cost a fraction of proprietary alternatives.
